The Australian Safe Communities Foundation (ASCF) is a national, not-for-profit organisation with a vision to make Australia the safest country in the world in which to live, learn, work and play - one community at a time.

The ASCF has been set up to advocate safety promotion at a national level and to complement the activities of established injury prevention and community safety organisations. Many of these organisations are already making great strides in reducing injury, minimising risk and promoting community safety.

Our Management Committee is drawn from a group of dedicated professionals representing various government and non-government agencies, community programs and private consultants.

The ASCF's work is based on three core values:

  1. Safety is a fundamental human right
  2. Everybody has a responsibility to promote and maintain their safety and the safety of others
  3. People are the heart of making communities safer places in which to live, work, learn, travel and play.

ASCF principles:

  • Build on existing local networks, infrastructure and capacities (each community has different resources, skills and capacities to deal with the unique safety issues they face)
  • Develop a shared vision and productive partnerships between community, government, academic and corporate knowledge areas
  • Foster national leadership in safety promotion
  • Ensure sustainability in community safety promotion at a national and community level
  • Apply the World Health Organisation's (WHO) indicators for safe communities which will guide our development
  • Practise an evidence based approach using world-wide experience.

The ASCF is a Certifying Centre for Safe Community Programs on behalf of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Community Safety Promotion, Department of Public Health Sciences, Division of Social Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden.
